Ben & Jerry's to get eggs from hens that don't live in cages |

MONTPELIER, Vt. - Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc. is changing its egg-buying policies to give hens a break.
The South Burlington-based ice cream maker will become the first
national food manufacturer to require egg producers to allow their
laying hens to live outside cages, the Humane Society of the United
States and the company said.

Scientists Protest Dolphin Slaughter |

Each September a months-long ritual starts up again in the Japanese villages of Taiji and Futo. Fishermen herd hundreds of dolphins into shallow bays by banging on partially submerged rods. Researchers say the dolphins are corralled into nets and then speared, hooked, hoisted by their tails, and finally eviscerated alive.
A new consortium of scientists and wildlife officials today called on the Japanese goverment to end the practice.

Horses 'too inbred' to race |

HEALTHY racehorses are being slaughtered for meat because of extreme inbreeding, according to Animal Aid, a campaigning group.
Thoroughbreds are being drawn from such a narrow gene pool that two-thirds are too fragile to start racing, and a large number of those that do race die of injuries, the report states.
